Day 2 - "Turtledove"
Word Count: 373
Characters: Roy, Riza, Hughes
Summary: Hughes gets a letter from Gracia in Ishbal
During the Ishbal campaign, Roy often lost track of time. But he always knew when the mail had arrived.
“Graciaaaaa! My love!”
Roy groaned, and looked over at Hughes, hugging a letter to his chest. He could almost see tiny hearts floating around his face. “Another letter?”
“Of course!” Maes said, grinning broadly as he kissed the envelope. “My turtledove always writes me right back!”
Roy rolled his eyes as Maes slit the envelope open—and proceeded to read and kiss the signature. “She wanted to write more, but she was so excited that she couldn’t think of anything—she’s a wonderful woman, indeed!”
Roy groaned. “Yep.”
He fully expected Maes to go on and on about all the positive attributes of his chosen mate—but he did not. “You know, she’s a really great woman—it’s too bad you don’t have a sweetheart, Roy.”
Roy shrugged, “Haven’t found a girl I liked enough.”
“Well, don’t be too picky, or you’ll never get anyone! You don’t want to turn thirty and still be unmarried, do you?” He let out a laugh. Roy gave a half-hearted one in return.
Maes gave him a thoughtful look, and then, “For you, I think you need a woman who’ll keep you in check. Someone who’ll watch your back and make sure you stay out of trouble. Someone who’ll look after you when I’m gone.”
“Gone?” Roy asked, giving him a confused look.
“Gone and living a happy life with my Gracia!” he laughed at him. “Yeah, you’ll need someone to rule you all right—you’re too much of a troublemaker otherwise. Oh look, here comes that sniper!” He said with a grin, nodding towards Hawkeye as she came towards them. Hughes stood up from where he was sitting. “Now if you’ll excuse me…”
“Where are you going?” Roy asked, looking at him suspiciously.
“Got to go write another letter to my Gracia!” Maes put on a big grin. “Look after him, will you?” he said to a bemused Hawkeye, before hurrying off to his tent.
“What was that about?” Hawkeye asked.
Roy had a feeling…especially with the way Maes had smirked when he noticed Hawkeye coming up the way. But he shrugged it off. “Who knows?”
